Does Data-Driven Commissioning replace the traditional on-site commissioning done during construction?

No, the data-driven commissioning compliments traditional on-site commissioning by providing the commissioning agent with additional insight into the operation of the equipment, especially if they are able to review trend data prior to the final stages of the on-site commissioning.

What is the difference between New Building Commissioning, Existing Building Commissioning, Retro Commissioning, Ongoing Building Commissioning

In the 4/23/2015 ASHRAE webinar, Ronald J Wilkinson made a good suggestion to clean up these confusing terms.   Replace the term Retro-Commissioning with Existing Building Commissioning.  Ron’s most important difference between New Building and Existing Building Commissioning is:

  • New Building Commissioning – the contractor fixes the problem
  • Existing/Ongoing Building Commissioning –the owner fixes the problem

…..and he uses the following definitions:

New Building Commissioning is done per
  1. Owner’s project requirements
  2. Designer’s Basis of Design
  3. Graphical Plans
  4. Written specifications

Existing Building Commissioning

  1. Identifies deferred maintenance
  2. Redefines building requirements
  3. Effects no-cost, low-cost fixes
  4. Provides training and data logging

Ongoing Building Commissioning – Repeats Existing Building Commissioning by

  1. Confirming past benchmarks
  2. Make new benchmarks as the facility evolves
  3. Implementing automatic fault detection
